Welcome to my journey in occupational therapy school!


My name is Sarah Block and I am a first year OT student from Collierville, TN. Before attending UTHSC, I received a Bachelor of Science from Tennessee Technological University. I chose OT because of my passion for helping others and making a difference in someones life. 


I played soccer at my institution for 4 years and still stay active in my free time. Although I loved and will cherish my time as an athlete, this transition has really given me time to focus all my time and energy into my new journey of life which is OT school.  I enjoy long walks as well as spending quality time with friends, family, and my cat Zoey.

 Getting ready for the day: Reaching for a granola bar in my pantry  Each morning, I go in my pantry and reach for breakfast to take to school. I will be talking about the action of my shoulder to elevate my arm up to the shelf where my granola bars are. I start with my arm in neutral position at 0 degrees flexion by my side, but as I begin to reach up to the top shelf in my pantry, my shoulder begins to flex as my arm reaches up.  My arm starts by my side, and then begins to elevate up over my head to reach up to my food. Flexion is occurring in my shoulder joint. Flexion as well as extension occurs in the sagittal plane along the frontal axis. Nutshell 4: My Why

 My Why: I was in fieldwork for undergrad when I got my acceptance to UTHSC. My supervisor made me take a picture  with it and looking back I am SO glad he made me. Speaking to a 6 year old child:      Hi! My name is Sarah, and I will be your occupational therapist. I know this seems confusing but let me explain it. I read that you love to play on the playground, but you get nervous going up to the top of the slide. That is something we can work on here! Occupational therapy is where you will get to work on fun skills that you can bring to the playground, or doing other things you love to do. I bet your big sister can get ready for school all by herself. That is something we will work on too! We can practice buttoning your shirts and zipping up your jacket. If you need help with homework you can bring it and we can practice your school skills too! We will have fun here while also working on things you may not feel confident with, or that you see your friend...

 Neuro Note #1:  Alzheimer's: A Real Love Story Mike and Julia Balson  https://www.alz.org/blog/alz/june_2016/alzheimer_s_a_real_love_story%E2%80%A6 I read an interview about Mike and Julia Balson, a couple who loves to travel the world together. I got to read about their past as a couple, but also their new obstacle that came with Mike developing Alzheimer's. We recently learned about Alzheimer's in class, so this story got to put that information into a real life situation. One misconception that I had about Alzheimer's is that it only happens super late in life. Mike is a perfect example that it does not always work out that way.   I chose this article because I think that caregivers and the patient's view of life is so important. With these heartbreaking conditions, it can be very easy for everyone involved to drown in their sorrows and live a miserable life.
