The Neuroscience of an Advertisement

It had a sad song and had really cute sad puppies and kittens. This commercial was all over tv and I have a distinct memory of talking about it with my friends on the bus on the way to school. We could not believe that people would want to hurt such cute animals. I still think about this commercial to this day, and how sad it made me feel. There were times when I would walk out of the room during it because I hated how sad it made me. Sarah McLachlan ended up making $30 million dol...

Locomotion and Assistive Technology

Locomotion and Assistive Technology  An assistive/ ambulation device is used to help a client with balance, strength, mobility, independence, and can help decrease pain. Fitting them properly is important to ensure safety and to decrease further injury. Nobody is the same size so knowing how to adjust them per client is important for the individual needs. Inaccurate fitting can further injure the client or make them uncomfortable, causing other negative compensating movements. Improper fittings can also increase the risk for falling or tripping  Canes: Fitting: Canes are the easiest to move around the environment, but the least stable. To fit a cane, the client should stand straight up and look ahead, with their arms to their side. There are a few different types of canes, depending on the client’s needs, mobility, and balance. There are standard canes and quad canes. Standard canes have one leg which provides 4 point of contact. Quad canes have 4 legs, which provide 4 p...

Transfers

A transfer is when the therapist moved the client from one place to another. For example, a common transfer is from the bed to a wheelchair, or vise versa. As we have been learning these in class, we have gained knowledge of proper transfers to ensure the clients safety, as well as our own. As I go through some precautions for transfers, I wanted to format it in a way that took us through a whole transfer. What do we need to start with, what do we do during, and what do we do after.  The first thing to consider before we even try to move the client is whether or not the client will need detailed instructions or extra help. Will they be able to understand your instructions? Talking to the client a little bit and making sure they are on the same page is not only a precaution, but also a great first step. This ensures that you and the client both know what is going to happen, and how it will happen. By spelling out all of the steps, the client can visualize and hear what will ha...

Blog 6a: Wheelchairs

Image
I got the privilege to read 2 chapters from  Paul Erway’s book 50 Abilities Unlimited Possibilities. Paul Erway is a man who wheeled a marathon in all 50 states. The states I read about were New Jersey, and Missouri.  Marathon 11: Cape May, NJ.       Erway was very excited for this marathon because of how beautiful the view and race was. He was able to see some ocean and scenes during the actual race. One big take away was the word "open-minded" (Erway, 2017). He kept repeating this word because they were a little bit unsure about the race path and difficultly. Knowing he was not able to just get up and run, he was open-minded about he challenges he was facing and how he knew he would get through them no matter what the circumstances were. This is so motivational to anyone who may be in a wheelchair or is not able to walk. Being optimistic about any situation that they are going through is just a positive way to approach any obstacle in life.   ...

Posture

Posture Analysis: 3 friends with bad posture 3 consenting friends in real time: Using electronics                                                  This is Georiga, sending a very important text. This is Claire, working very hard on EBP homework.  This is Rachel, also sending a very important text.  Pictured above are 3 girls in real time texting or looking at their screen. All of them are sitting differently, but have their neck in the same position. What is the common problem in these 3 pictures? Their posture! Not a single one of them looks comfortable.  I am going to be talking about the bottom picture. This is my little sister Rachel.  She is a texting queen and often sits in the position that is pictured. She will sit like that for hours in a chair, couch, or even on the floor propped up against her bed.  She often complains of back p...

A Look into Neurobiology: Our Senses

Sight and Taste: https://www.wired.com/2015/02/science-one-agrees-color-dress/      Do you remember this picture racing around the internet in 2015? I remember the debates in the hallways and locker rooms of my school over this picture. I always saw black and blue. I used to think that people who saw white and gold said it for attention, but based on science and they way our eyes and brains see color, that is not the case.       Cones mean color. Light travels to our retina which contains rods and cones, which help us see colors and light. They then send signals to the brain to tell us what we are seeing. Usually we all see the same, but for some reason this picture throws that theory away. There are factors like the time of day or undertones that people see differently. The background colors could throw some people off, or it is just human nature that we see things differently. They came to a conclusion that the dress is probably blue, but some ...

"Man from the South"

Image
https://english-e-reader.net/book/man-from-the-south-roald-dahl        If the soldier lost his finger, he would have many struggles in not only his job, but also in his daily life. As a naval sailor,  he has to hold a wheel, carry heavy objects, hold a gun, and exercise. He would have a hard time holding these things or being able to lift weights or even do pushups. He would also struggle with ADLs and iADLs. Holding a hairbrush could be difficult, or quickly putting on a complex naval uniform. Holding a pot of hot water without spilling for cooking would be a challenge, or even squeezing out shampoo or toothpaste.       Most to all of these daily occupations o require grip strength, which is required by the finger he would have lost, or the 5th digit. He would be losing about half of his grip strength, which is needed to hold his equipment or properly take care of himself. His 5th digit is located on the ulnar aspect of the hand, which allow...
